I believe I have the latest debian unstable pdfjadetex package. Actually it turns out that /jadetex/base/ucharacters.sty contains this unusual line \DefineCharacter{952}{3B8}{\ifmmode \theta \else \texttheta \fi}% which could be overridden in jadetex.cfg as \DefineCharacter{952}{3B8}{\ensuremath{\theta}} hope this is useful Doug
