No, they aren't persistent. The names are generated based on their position within the current document. Have you considered using the <?dbhtml filename="xxxx.html"?> processing instruction? If you place this as a child of the element you are chunking, the stylesheets will use that over the ID. So, you could have something like: <chapter id="reallylongdescriptiveid"> <?dbhtml filename="chap1.html"?> ... </chapter> <chapter id="shorter"> ... </chapter> Your first chapter would be written to file "chap1.html", and the second would be written to "shorter.html".
