What's the value of your body.font.family parameter? The default is just 'serif', which typically defaults to the Adobe Times Roman font, which does not include very many "special" characters. Try adding 'Zapf Dingbats' to your body.font.family parameter: <xsl:param name="body.font.family" select="'serif, Zapf Dingbats'"/> With font-selection-strategy set to character-by-character, XEP will use the first font in the list for each character. (You may have to double check that the characters you want are in Zapf Dingbats -- I think those you mentioned will be. If they aren't, you can try adding Symbol, also.)
