The free libxml2 tools (xsltproc and xmllint) meet those requirements. For detailed instructions, see: http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/ToolsSetup.html and http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/Catalogs.html Xalan will handle an entity resolver for catalogs using its -ENTITYRESOLVER and -URIRESOLVER options, but I don't know of a way to do that with Xerces for validation.
