I've fixed it by putting the call to the footnote-separator template outside the xsl:if but before the xsl:if itself, since that was the calling order I have found in my copy of version 1.65.1 of the stylesheets. Still, though, I have problems with the font dimension of the numbers indicating the presence of a footnote: control by means of the superscript.properties attribute set seems to be lost.
