There isn't a single template that gets a document's title, but there is a mode that returns the title of any element. You just need to select the document's root element. Something like this should work: <xsl:apply-templates mode="title.markup" select="/*[1]"/> That mode knows how to find the title as either a child of the element or of its *info element.
