The only solution I can think of is to run a preprocessing stylesheet to insert label attributes on all elements that take them, and then run the profiling stylesheet. The labeling stylesheet would be an identity transform, except that for certain elements it would use xsl:number to get the current node's number to add to a new label attribute on the element. The labels will override the automatic numbering when the profiled document is processed.
