I work mostly on Debian "sarge" 3.1 (but also on FreeBSD where most of the same stuff works). I use nxml-mode to edit (under Emacs) my XML files. I use xsltproc (from libxml2) to translate Docbook/XML to HTML. I use jade + jadetex (the same tools used by sgmltools) to translate Docbook/XML to PDF.
