All XML parsers must *read* the DTD to find Strictly speaking, an XML processor does not have to read an external DTD (i.e., an 'external subset') when the XML document has an XML declaration containing 'standalone="yes"' [1]. In practice, an XSLT processor will have a strong desire to read the external subset for the sake of the id() function (and, in XSLT 2.0, the idref() function). So much so that I haven't found a way to make Saxon not read the external subset even when I use 'standalone="yes"'. I would like to since I have a client who would like to use a DTD when editing but doesn't want to have to configure catalogs for when doing a transform on a different system.
