You must add xercesSamples.jar into your classpath, there is a simple sample class called sax.Counter that can be used as a handy CLI for Xerces: java -cp xercesImpl.jar;xercesSamples.jar sax.Counter -v -s -f doc.xml The only pity is that you can't specify schema name as a parameter, so there must be xsi:schemaLocation inside document pointing to schema.
