Subject: [comment] CIO article - March 2004 - BPM - A model student
Dear Sirs,
While the article gave a good view it did steer
readers wrong on
a couple of points.
First BPEL for web services was noted as "sharing
them with
disparate business units, partners and external
customers,
BPEL may be the way
to go".
In fact BPEL is designed to code lowlevel business
process
execution steps - in lieu of coding Java instead
(BEA and IBM
just produced a white paper on BPEL and Java for
programmers this week).
Not too many organizations would feel comfortable
sharing
source code with external customers and partners in
this way.
Therefore - BPEL really is focused inside your own
firewall -
not outside it.
However - the second point is that OASIS
itself is already
developing other specifications along with BPEL that ARE
designed to be used by external partners to share
and model business processes - and these are
the
OASIS BPSS, OASIS CAM and OASIS CPA
specifications -
that allow you to
define the big picture steps, information
exchanges and business
agreements.
Thanks, DW.
