Subject: RE: GIS SC Telecons staring again
Dear EM TC and GIS SC Members -
Time to start those GIS SC conference calls again! The topic of the calls
will be to discuss and agree on approaches for change requests to CAP and EDXL
(these could be best practices approaches) for extending and/or leveraging
additional geo capabilities.
I have reserved an OGC teleconference line for the next 4 "meetings". The
first of these will be on April 25 and then every two weeks.
In the meantime, I would like the GIS SC members to consider GeoRSS as a
possible starting point in our discussions. You can go to www.georss.org to review all the materials. I
suggest GeoRSS for several reasons. First, as GeoRSS is designed to geo-enable
RSS feeds, the same issues of simplicity coupled with extensibility and
flexibility are very similar requirements to those expressed by the EM TC.
Second, GeoRSS is the result of a collaboration between OGC staff and members,
the W3C, the RSS "geek" community and the map hacking community. Finally, and
perhaps most importantly, even though GeoRSS is young, there is growing momentum
for uptake and implementations. There are numerous implementations, including a
beta version by Microsoft for Virtual Earth 3.0. Why is this important? Well,
geo-enabled RSS feeds can be thought of as alerts!
