Francis Cave forwarded the following notes on Part 4:
4.7 Empty Cell
ÂÂÂ Whatever is said here should, I think, be consistent with the
function ISBLANK() returning TRUE. I think that the term âempty cellâ is
useful, because I think that the text would be less readable if it
always made reference to the function ISBLANK().
4.8 Reference
ÂÂÂ This is a good case in point. The sixth paragraph would be much
harder to read if we had to eliminate the term âempty cellsâ.
4.11.8 Criterion
ÂÂÂ Move the reference to 4.7 from the second bullet point up to where
the term âempty cellâ is used for the first time in the second paragraph.
ÂÂÂ I donât think that the bulleted list is presented very well. I would
prefer:
ÂÂÂ A Number or Logical value. A matching cell content equals the Number
or Logical value.
ÂÂÂ A value preceded by a comparator (<, <=, >, >=). 6.4.9
ÂÂÂ An optional value preceded by = 6.4.7. If the value is omitted, a
matching cell is an empty cell.
ÂÂÂ An optional value preceded by <> 6.4.8. If the value is omitted, a
matching cell is a non-empty cell. If the value is included, any cell,
including empty cells, are matching cells.
Note: "=0" does not match empty cells.
For = and <>, if the value is not empty and cannot be interpreted as a
Number type or one of its subtypes and the host-defined property
HOST-SEARCH-CRITERIA-MUST-APPLY-TO-WHOLE-CELL is true, comparison is
against the entire cell contents, if false, comparison is against any
subpart of the field that matches the criteria. For = and <>, if the
value is not empty and cannot be interpreted as a Number type or one of
its subtypes, 3.4 applies.
4.11.11 Criteria

because of this, there is a (potential) subtle difference between
