Subject: Re: [ubl-dev] Comments on UBL-NDR 2 Versioning
The size factor seems to be exacerbated somewhat by the number of attributes in many of the datatypes. However I'd like to think it would be straightforward to use the UBL 2 library and most of all the UBL 2 NDR to craft quite 'small' schemas. Then if small is especially beautiful in the eye of the implementers :-) one can use the ASN.1. Maybe it might be a successful line of approach to create a set of qualified datatypes first with either fewer attributes or, if convenient, with more default content used (as with the UBL codes). This should reduce the size a lot with only discretionary loss of functionality. In the process one might also restrict the datatype content such as to restrict the length of strings and numbers (much as ATG 2 seem to have done with their qualified datatypes). So the size and XSD complications don't come so much to bear on use of UBL Library and NDR to create completely new documents. Then one gets the benefits of the versioning and extensibility of the schema design rules along with UBL's pioneering application of the ISO standards 15000 and 11179. If I were implementing UBL today I'd want to allow for all these options (though I'd not necessarily use all of them - see those documents posted at http://www.systml.co.uk/xml/ ). So what would you say is the current state of UBL pickup in Asia? My impression is that UBL is getting bigger (and therefore more expensive) to implement every time I look at it. Version 2 seems to be a real humb-dinger. Given that in Asia there is a preference for 'cheap' and 'quick'.. I'm wondering who is picking it up? What accounting system integrations are there so far? Just wondering...
