Thanks Bryan and everyone for all the responses. I think the problem is definitely the mime type as Bryan points out. I don't get the problem with near identical files deeper in the package so I'm inclined to suspect the problem is with how the CMS serves up the top level page (e.g. the defaulting without the 'index.html' filename when the url just has the package name or something like that). Does it dictate the mime type for the default/top file but allow the browser to derive the mime type from the file extension in other cases? Anyway, I don't think that's it is the browser which is at fault since it can obviously handle XHTML in the other files of the same ilk. Steve
