Subject: [xliff] ITD to XLIFF

Hi all,

I've being doing some investigation with converting SDLX documents to XLIFF. For anyone who's interested, I've attached a Word template that contains a macro for converting from ITD to XLIFF. I've also attached a VB6 project that basically does the same thing (lots of common code). The conversion is by no means complete but I think it's a valid XLIFF document. I've missed out some information that we have in the ITD, primarily because I just wanted to get something working as a first instance. You'll need SDLX V4.2 installed before it can be run. I've also attached a sample output (with some very poor French translations).

I'm planning to get an ITD -> XLIFF -> ITD process going in SDLX. Although this is not ideal, it will allow SDLX to be used as an XLIFF filter for those file formats that SDLX currently supports (RTF, MIF, XML, XLS, PPT, DOC etc.). We may also look to adapt our existing OpenTag filters to produce XLIFF although this could possibly be achieved through the use of XSLT. Not being an expert, I can't be certain.

Actually handling XLIFF documents from any source in SDLX is going to be more complex if we want to support the full functionality of XLIFF. Our first major hurdle is going to be handling the myriad of ways of marking up the content with <bpt>, <ept>, <bx>, <ex>, <g>, <x>, <it>, <ph> etc. I'm currently thinking hard about the best way to make this work in SDLX and maintain maximum functionality.
