Meeting
Secretary: Suellen Stringer-Hye - Review and Publication: Bernard Vatant
Release: 2001, November 21.
Attending members:
Bernard
Vatant, Eamonn Neylon, Mary Nishikawa, Suellen Stringer-Hye.
Draft Proposal for
TC Requirements Document
Bernard asked committee
to look over the Requirements draft
document and comment or revise.
Statement of Purpose
TC discussed focus
of the statement, how broadly to define users of Published Subjects.
Eamonn asked for clarification of Oasis expectations for final recommendations.
Would TC also be responsible for implementing recommendations? This
led to discussions of audience -- for whom are the final documents intended?
Bernard suggested that the audience was current ontology/catalog creators
and editors and Topic Map authors and developers as well as Portal developers.
Eamonn offered to write a revision for the Statement of Purpose that
would include a statement of audience.
Recommendation for
Published Subject Definitions
Bernard asked TC
to consider whether it was necessary to differentiate between the Published
Subject Indicators (URIs) and the Published Subject Descriptors. After
much discussion of various issues the group determined that it was important
to keep them separate so that semantic information would be contained
in Subject Descriptor and kept independent from Subject Indicator (permanent
URI).
TC then discussed whether RDF and Dublin Core were a good mechanism
for capturing the descriptor information. The group felt that it was
important to use RDF if possible as it was close to Topic Maps as a
data model and powerful enough to describe desirable data elements.
At this point, Eamonn left the conversation after volunteering to edit
the document.
Semantic Registration
of Published Subjects
The remaining committee
members discussed various mechanisms for human accessibility to semantic
information available in URI. Mary proposed looking at PURL.
TC members agreed to investigate this as well as various other options
and determine if there is value in making semantic information human
as well as machine readable
Liaisons
TC discussed various
Liasion opportunities.
Mary will attend the W3C day in Tokyo on 11/29.
Bernard received notification from the Web Ontology Working Group of
willingness to work cooperatively with the TC. The call finished on
further discussion of liaison opportunities with the W3C.
Next Meetings
The next F2F Meeting
is set for Orlando
XML 2001 Conference:
December 14 - 12:00-5:00pm
Bernard will investigate conference call for those committee members
not able to attend conference in person.
