 OASIS Open Position: Webmaster / Jr. Web Developer

Job Title: Webmaster / Jr. Web Developer

Job Description:

OASIS has an opportunity for a webmaster / junior web developer to join the Technology Services team at OASIS in our headquarters in Billerica, MA, USA. Working with a Sr. Web Developer, and a System Administrator, you will report to the Manager of Technology Services.

The job responsibilities include performing all day-to-day maintenance activities on OASIS managed web sites (oasis-open.org, xml.org, etc.) including developing new web pages, updating data and document links, posting press releases, news items and other duties as required. Attention to detail is a must while working on fast turn-around for multiple websites. With limited frequency, the duties also include developing new graphics by processing photographs and artwork using software like the GIMP.

Job Duties include:

  • Daily website content edits backed by version control
  • XML.org news updates/RSS feeds, news, press releases
  • Development of new web pages as needed
  • Administration of web content systems such as Drupal
  • Brainstorming and problem-solving of user requests for structures, layout and troubleshooting
  • Incident response
  • Customer service

Job Requirements: Knowledge and Previous Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years experience developing web sites is required on the LAMP platform.
  • Must have a solid grasp of (hand-coded) HTML using advanced editing tools such as Quanta and KDiff3.
  • Must use CSS for presentation, produce standards-compliant XHTML and understand advanced CSS techniques (box-model hack, tabs, floats).
  • Thorough knowledge of browser/platform compatibility including text browsers.
  • Understanding of back-end server processing (PHP, SSI) in generating HTML output.
  • Experience with desktop office applications such as OpenOffice.
  • Experience using Linux on the desktop.
  • Ability to construct layout, organization and navigation of content and web applications.
  • Experience with website production processes, including Quality Assurance and Link testing.
  • Strong written, spelling and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience writing technical/internal wiki documentation for code and procedures
  • Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to raise issues/concerns a must
  • Strong initiative, excellent work ethic and a desire to learn and succeed
  • Must be organized with a strong attention to detail.
  • Goal-oriented and able to thrive in a team environment

Desirable Skills or Experience:

  • Familiarity with Internet Standards
  • Experience working within member organizations
  • Knowledge of JavaScript, DHTML, DOM, PHP, Python, and MySQL is desired.
  • Experience with XML, XML Schema and XSLT.
  • Experience with Open Source software and content management systems such as Drupal, and Zope is highly desirable.
  • Experience with wiki systems and syntax especially Mediawiki and MoinMoin
  • Experience using and administering blogging and/or forum software
  • Experience with IRC, chat software, virtual collaboration systems.
  • Experience with RSS / Atom feeds
  • Experience with techniques for creating mock-ups or prototypes.
  • Experience with technical writing and/or HTMLHelp for end-users
  • Experience with Source Control (Subversion, or CVS)
  • Experience with Internationalization and Localization of web content
  • Experience with website statistical reporting software like AWStats and/or Webalizer
  • Creativity and experience with design tools like the GIMP, Blender, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator for bitmapped and vector graphics creation, manipulation, optimization desired
  • Experience with Print media
  • Experience with Webinars - editing audio
