Learning map proposal for DITA 1.3
Accepted for Stage 1 by TC

Incorporated changes and feedback for Stage 2 proposal.

Mark provided a walk through of the
update to the DITA 1.3 proposal 13089 to add support to the Learning & Training Specialization to enable a standardized approach for storing learning objects and learning groups as separate, reusable components.

Need a standardized method for storing learning objects separately from the learning map in order to allow re-use and componentization (and compatibility with other learning objects).

LearningGroupMap and LearningGroupMapRef added per request of the subcommittee.

Technical impact of proposal: defines new map types for learningObjectMap and learningGroupMap (specializations of generic map type). Also adds new topicref types: learningObjectMapRef and learningGroupMapRef.

Scott: Question, do these new types also include the Learning metadata domain?

Subcommittee agrees that it should include it.

ACTION: Doug to create the DITA-OT plugin for the DTD and XSD specializations for this.

ACTION: Eliot to work up RelaxNG version.

Will submit for Stage 2 to the TC after the schemas have been implemented.

Other Topics:

Eliot starting to see a need for common terminology for features across textbook publishing. May have similar need for eLearning. Worth considering for future enhancements.

Amber: needed to add additional specializations around instructor notes that clearly indicate what the instructor should say, do, etc.

Mark: need better outputs that are eLearning specific, such as Syllabus (course outline), Instructor Handbook, Instructor Notes, Student Handbook, Presentation (slides), SCORM eLearning. Does it make sense to donate enhancements like this to DITA-OT?

Amber: QTI is now back under active development. Should we continue to work on assessments or work with other standards? Especially WRT compliance issues. Also having to address Bibliographies too.

Eliot: Need to make sure that the base is open to extension, rather than being locked into a particular implementation.

John: Suggest setting up some more agendas for future meetings based on these new topics.

ACTION: All to submit agenda topics to the list. Perhaps set up bi-weekly meetings to discuss future of learning and training.

Joann: ComTECH just hosted their first DITA Learning and Training webinar last week. It was well-attended. Not much response from eLearning Guild though. How can we drive more interest? ComTECH willing to host more webinars to spread the word on the specialization.

Mark: it was very difficult to go from DITA XML to the SCORM conformant course, so it will be good to help provide default stylesheets that can help people produce output more easily.

Next meeting planned for next Thurs 10/18 (or possibly 10/25 - may have conflict with Tekom conference)
