The sphinx-tabs example looks a lot like nested variable lists to me. You have a tab (term) and text (listitem) and you can nest them.

Rather than creating new markup, would it make sense to treat tabs as an alternative display option?

Currently, the xsl stylesheets support two different display options for variablelist: block and table. Maybe tabs should be a third option.
