Terminology Discussion

Committee discussed Recommendations for Documentation of Published Subjects (working draft)

Document Revisions

  • Document organization: Change "Gentle Introduction" to include glossary terms and more narrative. Include simple glossary definitions as well.
  • Add statement somewhere expressing that URIs that don't resolve to published subject indicators shouldn't be used as published subject identifiers.
  • Discussion about need for both Subject Identifier and Published Subject Identifier in glossary. Committee agrees on the conceptual difference between the two and the necessity of including them both.
  • Discussion about merits or problems of using acronym PSI to refer to both Published Subject Indicators and Published Subject Identifiers. PSI is already established in topic maps specifications and various litterature as acronym for Published Subject Indicator and can't be changed. Ambiguity between the two is resolvable through concept of human vs. machine purposing. Suggestion to add statement about this difference and possibly a diagram.
  • Decision to leave the slightly awkward "published subject documentation set" as working name until better wording is found. Reword definition: "published subject indicators and accompanying documentation".
  • "Subject Indicator Reference" officially dropped as concept deemed extraneous or superseded by other concepts.
  • Proposal to include Glossary definitions in ISO 13250 specification. Make sure it is stable before doing so as it is difficult to revise once it has been included in the standard. Don't include definition of "published subject documentation set" in ISO 13250 as it is outside scope of XTM.
  • Amplify definition of "canonical URI" . (Lars Marius and Steve Peeper agreed to provide wording)

The document Requirements for Published Subjects Documentation will be reviewed to match the adopted terminology, and submitted to TC vote by e-mail.

Published Subject Documentation Set (content and structure)

Issues Discussed:

  • Should we recommend syntax or just abstract structure and concepts for PSDS?
The consensus is that the TC recommendations will not recommend any particular syntax, but a general abstract model. Although, for some specific formats, it will provide a recommended syntax.
  • Even if no particular syntax is recommended, should examples be provided? Consensus is "Yes"
  • If yes, what syntax should the examples be in and what concepts should they illustrate?
Suggestions are made for some examples and use cases, including Countries and Languages, Measures and Units, RDDL and ebXML registries, Italian Opera, Astronomy, Beers Taxonomy ...
It is agreed that many examples in various fields and problematics need to be considered, to make sure the recommmendations encompass the widest possible scope of applications and use cases.
