Description

This PowerPoint file has animation that captures the combination of access mechanism and capability that is often thought of as a "service". A person wanting to get her tires rotated uses the store front as the access mechanism to the capability of rotating tires. The desired real world effect (RWE) is rotated tires. The person needs money to pay for the tire rotation and goes to an ATM that is the access mechanism to the bank capability to debit her account and provide money as cash through the ATM. Her health club could use a different access mechanism to use the same bank capability to debit her account and provide money (this time as an electronic transfer). The definition of service in the SOA-RM concentrates on the access mechanism, which includes the interface but can include things needed to use the capability, such as user authentication.
