9:00 - 12:30 | WS-BPEL Workshop & Showcase Displays

Business processes are the foundation of a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). The Web Services Business Process Execution Language (WS-BPEL) was designed to specify business processes that are both composed of, and exposed as, Web Services. WS-BPEL (or BPEL as it is more commonly called) is supported by a broad variety of both large and small vendors as represented by their participation on the WS-BPEL TC. WS-BPEL is central for defining SOA business processes. This workshop will cover three primary aspects of WS-BPEL:

  • WS-BPEL Business Value
    Presenter(s):
    Frank Ryan, Active Endpoints

    This presentation will clarify the value that WS-BPEL can add to your existing processes and examine some common scenarios in which BPEL should be used. The presenter will explain the status of the specification, WS-BPELs role within a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and its relationship to other Business Process Management (BPM) initiatives. It will also review a real-world use case to illustrate BPELs role in an service oriented architecture.

  • WS-BPEL Technical Overview
    Presenter(s):
    Dieter Koenig, IBM

    This presentation will provide a technical introduction to the WS-BPEL 2.0 language for developers and architects interested in gaining an understanding of the concepts on which it is based and how it can be used to compose Web services. Specific topics will include:

    • How WS-BPEL fits with web services standards
    • Overview of language constructs used to create executable BPEL processes
    • Differences between executable and abstract processes
    • Changes from BPEL4WS 1.1 to WS BPEL 2.0
  • WS-BPEL Deep Dive
    Presenter(s):
    Charlton Barreto, Adobe Systems

    The last portion of the workshop will cover an indepth discussion of the language with information on usage of some of the more advanced constructs. Topics will include advanced features such as: Partner links, Event Handlers, Fault Handlers, and Extensibility.

The workshop will conclude with an open Q&A session. Attendance at this workshop is free with Symposium registration and also available separately.

Showcase your support for WS-BPEL by participating in the table-top displays during the workshop. This half-day event offers a low-cost opportunity to reach a highly targeted audience of users and influencers from both the public and private sectors. Learn more...

9:00 - 12:30 | OpenDocument Workshops: Adoption, Accessibility, Programmability and Future & Showcase Displays

The members of the OASIS ODF Adoption TC will be hosting a special half day workshop dedicated to topics important to understanding the ODF standard and its technology. Due to the emergence of multiple ODF supporting applications interoperabiility of content and presentation is a user requirement. Ongoing efforts within the Formula and Metadata subcommittess is addressing these issues. In the area of programmability, several toolkit projects have emerged that promise to simplify the development of new, innovative ODF supporting applications. OpenDocument Format solutions and applications must meet and serve the needs of Persons with Disabilities. The new ODF v1.1 specification paves the way for Assistive Technology Vendors (ATVs) to implement support for ODF implementations. And lastly, public policy change in major governments is accelerating the adoption of ODF.

Agenda items include:

  • Keynote: The Past, Present, and Future of ODF
    Presenter(s):  Michael Brauer, Technical Architect Software Engineering, Sun Microsystems
  • ODF Accessibility
    Presenter(s):  Pete Brunet, Accessibility Software Engineer, IBM
  • ODF Programmability
    Presenter(s):  Rob Weir, Software Architect, IBM, J. David Eisenberg, Instructor, Evergreen Valley College, and Michael Brauer, Technical Architect Software Engineering, Sun Microsystems
  • Interoperability
    Presenter(s):  Alan Clark, Strategic Advisor for Industry Initiatives and Standards, Novell and Rob Weir, Software Architect, IBM
  • Adoption
    Presenter(s):  Don Harbison, OASIS ODF Adoption TC Co-chair, IBM

The workshop will end with a closing session addressing the Adoption of ODF.  Attendance at this workshop is free with Symposium registration and also available separately.
