The new OASIS technical committee will develop the Election Markup Language (EML), an XML specification for the structured interchange of data among hardware, software and service vendors who provide election or voter services to public or private organizations. “The need for a consistent, auditable, automated election system was evidenced in the 2000 U.S. Presidential Election, but the requirement is pervasive worldwide, especially in developing democracies where implementing technology responsibly is critical,” noted Laura Walker, executive director of OASIS. “EML, the first XML specification of its kind, will provide a uniform way to allow systems to interact as new global election processes evolve and are adopted.” Government elections are just one aspect of EML. The new OASIS eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) Technical Committee will define an XML specification for expressing policies for information access over the Internet. “XACML will define the representation for rules that specify the who, what, when and how of information access,” explained Simon Y. Blackwell of Psoom, chair of the OASIS XACML Technical Committee. “Access control, which is often called ‘rights management’ or ‘entitlement management,’ determines who can look at something, what they can do with it, the type of device they can look at it on, etc.” “Security is a very broad area for XML development-there are many aspects of security that interrelate,” said Karl Best, OASIS director of technical operations. “This new OASIS XACML Technical Committee will work in parallel with the existing OASIS Security Services group, which is concerned primarily with authorization and authentication issues. Boston, MA USA; April 2, 2001–OASIS, the XML interoperability consortium, together with NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, added two new test suites for the XML Document Object Model (DOM) Level 1 to the growing collection of OASIS Conformance Tests for XML Technologies. DOM Level 1 provides a standard set of objects for representing HTML and XML documents, a standard model of how these objects can be combined and a standard interface for accessing and manipulating them. The two DOM Level 1 Conformance Test Suites were developed by NIST and submitted to OASIS for the benefit of the entire XML community. They include both ECMAScript and Java tests. The ECMAScript DOM Test Suite includes over 800 ECMAScript tests, covering fundamental, extended, and HTML interfaces. The tests are non-biased, platform independent and can be downloaded for local use. Additionally, an interactive test harness for IE5 is provided to run the tests and provide instant color-coded results. Although IE5 dependent, the test harness serves as a model from which other test harnesses can be built. The Java DOM Test Suite also contains more than 200 tests, covering all fundamental and extended interfaces. The tests are organized into a set of classes, one for each interface. The suite includes a test driver that accepts implementations, interfaces and output files. “Both DOM Level 1 test suites represent a significant addition to the set of OASIS conformance products. These specifications are the result of more than a year’s work by organizations and standards bodies around the world, which have come together to advance a common framework for global electronic business. Boston, MA, USA; March 13, 2001 – OASIS, the XML interoperability consortium, announced the formation of a new technical committee to create a specification for validating XML documents with TREX (Tree Regular Expressions for XML). Using XML syntax, TREX extends the concept of regular expressions (familiar to many Web developers) to XML structures. TREX is the latest in a long list of accomplishments by James Clark, widely regarded as one of the most prolific contributors to the field of structured information standards. Clark served as technical lead for the W3C’s XML 1.0 Recommendation and editor of the W3C Recommendations for both XPath and XSLT. He is perhaps best known as the author of open-source parsers including expat and XP for XML and sgmls and SP for SGML. “There is a genuine need for a straightforward, easy-to-learn XML schema language, and TREX delivers that,” said James Clark, who will serve as chair of the OASIS TREX Technical Committee. “I am excited to be developing the TREX specification within OASIS. The OASIS technical process is both open and lightweight, so we expect to benefit from a maximum level of participation with a minimal amount of organizational overhead.” Unlike many schema languages, TREX limits its scope to describing and validating the structure and content of an XML document. It does not attempt to specify any application processing semantics. TREX also gains simplicity by treating attributes and elements uniformly. TREX can partner with a separate datatyping language, such as the W3C XML Schema Datatypes. “TREX is a new, powerful tool for XML developers. The new OASIS conformance test suite, updated to be in sync with XML Second Edition, includes more than 1,000 new tests. “Major XML software vendors rely on the OASIS test suite to ensure their products are compliant with the W3C XML recommendation,” said Mary Brady of NIST, chair of the OASIS XML Conformance Technical Committee. “This second edition builds on that success and provides additional conformance tests. We integrated over 1000 new tests contributed by IBM and modified the test suite to be consistent with changes to the XML recommendation.
