8:30 AM - 9:15 AM | WELCOME AND CLOSING KEYNOTE: THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS INTEROPERABILITY |
Presenter: Randy Heffner, Vice President in Forrester's Application Development & Infrastructure Research Group
The Internet turned network interoperability into a given. Web Services are building a foundation for application messaging interoperability. At the same time, vertical industry groups continue to standardize message content and migrate to XML, ushering in the era of business interoperability. How far will it go? How much business interoperability do we need? This session will use Forrester's vision for the future of IT, Digital Business Architecture, as a framework to outline standards requirements for the future of business interoperability. |

9:45 AM - 10:45 AM | NEW IDEAS SESSION |
Panel Leader: Pete Wenzel, Sun Microsystems |
For over 12 years, OASIS has been a nexus of innovators developing practical standards-based solutions to the problems faced by e-business adopters. Yet its technical agenda is completely determined by its active membership, in response to real needs that arise in the pursuit of a vision of global e-business. In this session, we examine several interesting and promising opportunities for new technical work in OASIS, with interoperability being a key aspect. What are some currently unsolved problems that could benefit from standardization within OASIS' Technical Committee Process? What techniques can be applied to improve the interoperability, and therefore quality, of future standardization efforts? What remains to be done, to ensure the success of existing standards work? These are the types of issues the panelists will address.

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM | GRAND-FINALE PANEL: INTEROP CHALLENGES |
Panel Leader: Jishnu Mukerji, HP
Seamless, out of the box Interoperability has been the holy grail motivating much of the standardization activities in the distributed computing space, as well as more recently in the e-Business and e-Government spaces. However, after decades of standards crafting reaching the worthy goal has proved to be elusive. It has also been debatable whether with each new cycle of standards we have gotten any closer to the elusive goal. Web Services and more generally Internet-based middleware infrastructures represent the current round of attempts to reach this goal. This panel will voice opinions on this matter and discuss various aspects of this challenge of getting us to the elusive goal. The panel will start by attempting to answer questions like: "Is this a realistic and worthy goal?"; "Are we there yet?'; "How would we know when we are there?"; "Is it better to live with some lack of interoperability instead of trying hard?"; "What is keeping us from being there already?"; "What can we do about it?"; and of course any other questions in this area that the audience comes up with.
