8:30 AM - 9:30 AM | WELCOME AND INDUSTRY PANEL |
User Implementations of OASIS and ACORD Standards
Staff from OASIS and ACORD (Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development, a global, nonprofit insurance association whose mission is to facilitate the development and use of standards for the insurance, reinsurance and related financial services industries) will lead a panel discussion with users from major insurance companies who have been implementing solutions using ACORD and OASIS standards. Learn how standards are translated from specifications into working systems that support large businesses using Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA), Web Services, and industry-standard XML messages.
Panel Leader: Mark Schenecker, SAP Labs LLC
Panelists:
Lloyd A. Chumbley, Assistant Vice President, Standards, ACORD, United
States
Steve Betts, Chief Information Officer, Aon Re Global, United States
Carl Mattocks, Consultant, ITIL Application Knowledge Management, MetLife
Peter Roden, Director of Technology Development, OASIS

Using SAML's Extensions Mechanism in Support of Collective Identity
| The Standards Perspective |
The Security Assertions Markup Language (SAML) defines a number of extensibility points to ensure that as new requirements emerge they can be addressed without destroying the interoperability enabled by the stable core SAML 2.0 specifications. The SAML extensibility mechanisms will be presented in the context of a proposed extension designed to distinguish between 'individual' and 'collective' identities - a key concept in the telecommunication space.
Presenters: Paul Madsen, Security Researcher, NTT, Canada and Ashish Patel,
Senior Software Architect, France Telecom R&D, France
How Standards Address Interoperability Needs: An Industry View
| The Standards Perspective |
Interoperability requires standards. But what requirements do standards and the process for their development need to fulfill so that interoperability can sufficiently be achieved? Based on a general standards development model that defines subsequent phases and actors in standardization, a set of guidelines is proposed that can be used to increase the efficiency, quality and usability of standards so that the ultimate goal of interoperability does not remain to be a dream.
Presenter: Claus von Riegen, Director, Web Services Standards, SAP AG, Germany |

Focus on the User Community: Effectively Using Modular Collaborative Process Definitions and Profiles to Realize eBusiness Interoperability
| The Standards and Business Perspectives |
This presentation focuses on engaging user communities to realize and implement a practical approach to process interoperability. Effective use of modular collaborative process definitions and profiles will be described in the context of real-world application to realize eBusiness interoperability.
Presenter: Monica Martin, XML Web Services Standards Architect, Sun Microsystems, United States
Bridging the Business to IT Gap
| The Business, Infrastructure, and Product Perspectives |
During the last several years, the IT industry has focused significant attention on the problem known as the "Business/IT Gap". This gap is primarily one of semantics, such that business people and IT people appear to speak and think in entirely different languages. IBM has specifically addressed "the Gap" within numerous technical forums and studies. These studies have typically concluded that, while the company and the industry have continued to make significant progress, there is still a long way to go. After studying this subject, and reflecting on the studies themselves, the presenter (and authors) have reached two, possibly controversial, conclusions. One conclusion discussed will be that there will always be a gap. The other conclusion is that there is not just one gap, but many. The reason that they were forced to these conclusions is that gaps are caused by specialization. Experts in any new technology or business field will have a gap with non-experts, thus gaps are inevitable.
Presenter: Ray Harishankar, Distinguished Engineer, IBM Service Area Executive for Architecture & Technology, United States
How Business and IT Interoperate Using Service Oriented Architecture
| The Business and Semantic Perspectives |
Focus on the products, tools and standards that support the realisation of
SOA has precluded the participation of the business in the SOA movement.
This presentation introduces a method for developing a business-driven SOA
that encourages meaningful conversations between the business and IT and
provides architectural traceability from business drivers to technology
selection.
Presenters: Mark Pettit, Head of Integration and Product Services, Capgemini, Great Britain and Steve Jones, CTO for Application Development

A Development Process and Tools for Content Standards
| The Testing Perspective |
Information exchange specifications, particularly for business applications integration, typically evolve and require maintenance as the integration project proceeds. In addition, these information exchange specifications should be consistent and valid in terms of agreed upon standards and guidelines, and reused as much as possible in an effort to bring about interoperability. This talk will describe a process NIST has identified for the development of robust, interoperable information exchange specifications, as well as tools developed to support these activities.
Presenter: Simon Frechette, Member of the Manufacturing Systems Integration Division, National Institute of Standards and Technology, United States |

12:30 PM - 1:45 PM | EFFECTIVELY CHAIRING AN OASIS COMMITTEE WORKSHOP |
OASIS staff will join new, existing, and prospective TC leaders to discuss issues surrounding TC Process, IPR, Kavi, membership, InterOps, publicity, certification and testing, and more. We'll share information about how to build consensus, promote adoption, cope with legal realities, grow support inside and outside OASIS, and take advantage of Consortium resources. All TC chairs, secretaries, and editors are strongly encouraged to attend this session. Anyone with an interest in a leadership role in a new or existing TC is also welcome. Please see the online registration form to sign up. |
4:45 PM - 5:00 PM | MINI BREAK |
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM | TC LIGHTNING ROUNDS |
The OASIS Symposium will again feature an overview of the Technical Committees, by the TCs--lightning round updates on each OASIS Committee. It promises to be a great opportunity to learn what the TCs are accomplishing, find out the status of related work, provide input, identify areas for cross-TC communication, and build support.
